Amnezia VPN or AmneziaWG: which WARP config do you need?
AmneziaWG, AmneziaVPN and standard WireGuard are different applications. A file accepted by one is not automatically supported by the others. This guide describes a generated .conf in an AmneziaWG-compatible client; it does not create an Amnezia Premium subscription or set up your own server.
Check your installed client’s AWG support. The generator can emit AWG 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 options independently. Selecting every option is not a compatibility test. For a standard WireGuard client, select WireGuard to remove AWG extensions.
Using WARP Generator with Amnezia VPN
Choose the export for the protocol your installed app accepts. This site labels its .conf format AmneziaWG; selecting WireGuard in the protocol controls removes AWG-specific fields. Renaming a Clash YAML or Xray JSON file to .conf does not convert it.
Amnezia VPN offers a connection-settings-file import. Check its supported formats and your app version before using the downloaded file. A generated WARP profile is an independent Cloudflare connection, not an Amnezia account key, Premium subscription or self-hosted server.
| What you are importing into | What to check |
|---|---|
| AmneziaWG | A .conf file with AWG fields supported by the installed version |
| Standard WireGuard | A .conf file generated with WireGuard selected and AWG extensions removed |
| Amnezia VPN | Its file-import workflow and support for the profile’s protocol; the .json extension alone does not establish compatibility |
Prepare a file for your app
Select AmneziaWG as the config format, then choose protocol options supported by your client. Keep notes so you can repeat a working combination. The file contains a private key: store it securely.
- For the first test, use All sites, the default endpoint and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1). Leave MTU at 1280 and avoid changing several advanced settings at once.
- Generate the configuration and select Download config. Keep the .conf extension; a file named .conf.txt may not appear in the client’s import picker.
- Generate a separate configuration for each device. Give test profiles descriptive names and keep a working profile while checking a replacement.
Import the .conf and activate the tunnel
Use the app’s file-import option, not a subscription URL or account-key field. Button names differ by platform; the official AmneziaWG documentation linked below provides platform-specific illustrations.
- Open your compatible app and choose the option to add or import a tunnel from a file.
- Select the downloaded .conf. If an embedded browser did not save it, open the generator in your normal browser and download again.
- Review the operating system’s VPN permission prompt. Activate the imported tunnel, then check connection details and try opening a website.
Separate import errors from connection failures
An unknown-field error involving Jc, I1 or another AWG option calls for checking compatibility before changing DNS. Importing successfully only proves that the client accepted the file, not that the endpoint is reachable from your network.
If there is no recent handshake, investigate the endpoint, network and protocol settings. If a handshake exists but sites do not open, investigate DNS and routing. The troubleshooting guide below explains the next checks.
| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| File not listed | Download folder and .conf extension |
| Unknown field | App type and supported AWG options |
| No handshake | Endpoint and network |
| Handshake, but sites fail | DNS and routing |
